Torres Strait Islander peoples, who can trace their ancestry back to the first settlers and retain a strong cultural identity today. This includes the Bugnaroo clan of the Djabuguru and Bunurong (Boon wurrung or Bunjil) clans that migrated from the northern part of what is now Victoria to what are now the city's inner suburbs, where they established themselves on the banks of the Yarra River.
In May 1835, the landing party from the Lady Nelson arrived at what is now known as Williamstown in western Port Philip. The following January saw the arrival of the Tom Thumb with an additional three hundred passengers. By April 1836, many of those aboard had been settled around Port Phillip, mostly north of Melbourne. A small settlement was also formed at Williamstown.
On 24 September 1837, the governor of New South Wales officially proclaimed Melbourne the seat of government for the colony of New South Wales, which then included all of the mainland outside of Western Australia. On 22 December of the same year, the original charter establishing the Crown settlement of Australia was granted by Queen Adelaide to colonial leaders including John Batman, the self-styled "Father of Melbourne". In exchange for a payment of £100 and other considerations, most notably land grants along the Yarra above its confluence with the Maribyrnong River, the rights to hunt and fish were ceded to the colonists by the Kulin nation. There were about 10,000 Aboriginal people living within what became the state of Victoria when it separated from New South Wales on 1 July, 1851.
The port at Melbourne, located on the Yarra between the present day cities of Richmond and Collingwood, was developed early in the settlement's history. Ships would anchor off Princes Wharf, load goods from warehouses onto lighter boats, and tow them to shore via the Yarra. Although coal mining began shortly after settlement, manufacturing such as ironworking did not become prominent until the second half of the nineteenth century when the city gained its nickname
