Leeds is the 7th largest city in the UK, with an urban population of about 508,000(2011年数据). It has a metropolitan area population of over 1.3 million and lies approximately 164 kilometres north-northwest of London. The city is situated at the confluence of the rivers Aire and Calder, which are spanned by three bridges. The two easternmost bridges—the original 1829 construction and the newer, more modern 2011 replacement for it—link Leeds to Harrogate in North Yorkshire. The third bridge connects Leeds to Wakefield and its location near to the centre of town means that all roads lead through this point.

In 2011, there was an estimated 650,000 residents in the Leeds urban area——an increase of just under 3% on the previous census estimate (as at 2001). Over half of those living in Leeds were born outside the United Kingdom, with the largest groups having originated from Pakistan, India and Bangladesh. At the 2011 Census, 78 per cent of households spoke English exclusively at home while 7 per cent had some level of proficiency in Urdu; 6 per cent had some competence in Punjabi and less than 1 per cent could speak Gujarati or Hindi. In total, 235 languages were spoken at home across the city’s housing stock With so many cultures and nationalities represented, Leeds is very much a ‘melting pot’ where you can experience a huge range of cuisines, languages and religions. And what makes this such a great cultural melting pot is the fact that these diverse communities have been, and still are being, absorbed into mainstream society. This is something that will never change as long as Leeds retains its status as one of Britain’s most vibrant and dynamic cities.
